The function of science and art was and is discussed by scholars as well as scientists for hundreds of years. Bacon had tried to prove the positive function of science in his New Instrument, in which he argued that science is an intrument to conqure the nature. In his eyes, science is to assure the welfare of the people. From then on, science is always regarded as an important technology in pursuing more wealth, more convenient lives. At least it was an vital method to enstrength the foundation of social development. This idea is still popular among all nations. Fortunately, scholars from Frankfurt School such as Walter Bejamine, Thoedore Holkheim, and other fellows, denigrated this ideology. They thought Science played very negative function in everyday life. As for art's function, discussions seem more subtle and confusing. In ancient Greece, the ideas on this issue seemed totally opposite. Plato thought art is memesis, which could serve to approach Truth; whereas his disciple, Aristotle held that art, especially tragedy are helpful to purify souls. The lower taste of art such as the paintings and comedy, also help ridicule the existing fouls in society. This discussion didn't solve this issue, but brought more subtle influence on the discussion later. The supporters of each side have enough evidence to prove they are right. But to me, whatever function of science plays depends on the people who take use of it in much same as that of art. More accurately, science can ensure our life if we are in danger. on the contrary, it can also destroy our life if we misuse it. The atomic bomb in Hiroshima is such case. Good art can do well to us, but bad art could bring harm to us.
