Reading as base, doing as practice The option of learning by reading or learning by doing is always a controversial problem among learners. Which is the better choice? In fact, both of these two ways of learning benefit in different parts through learning. I believe that they are the same important in learning period for several reasons. First of all, reading gives us fundamental knowledge of what we learn and makes our action more purposing. Nobody could do anything well without the basic knowledge of a task. Say something about myself as an example. Several years ago when asked to study the living habits of a particular kind of butterfly by my teacher, I was so passionate towards the interesting task that I had never experienced before that I got on my way to the botanical garden immediately without acknowledging anything about it. Observing those butterflies a whole day long with great patience and passion, I thought I must have learned a lot. However, when asked about the harvest I got, my brain was in a sheer blank. Later on, my teacher told me that doing some reading about the butterflies before practical action would surely make my trip more purposing. Meanwhile, doing gives us comprehensive sensual feelings of what we learn, which is something impossible to get through reading. We could only create the image in our brain by reading words while doing provides us an opportunity to verify, which the essential difference between reading and doing is. I’ll raise Fabre for instance. As an expert in researching insects, he spent almost all his life observing in the nature and recording the consequence. Reading books of former scientists only provide him little about insects. In order to get something of his own, Fabre climbed mountains, waded streams and went to anywhere possible to find and observe insects. Also doing experiments in his home was also part of his work. By integrating all his hard work, he finished the famous book, THE INSECTS. Fabre’s accomplishment gives us a perfect proof of the importance of doing in learning.
