China is a nation enjoys 56 ethnic groups which possess their own dialects. Under such circumstance, it is difficult for people to understand each other when dialects occur in the dialogue between people from different places. Thus, for the convenience of communication, dialects are not acceptable in public places. Living in the community consisting of people from different areas, it is necessary to standardize the language people use in public as to provide a tool for everyone to exchange ideas with each other. Certainly, dialects are not banned, but are only used in private dialogues, for there is no problem for understanding on this occasion. The existence of an offical language is of crucial importance, especially in the normal conference or speeches. If dialects are accepted in public areas, it is possible that one's speech is unintelligible to others. Then this will lead to an ineffective communication that may probably cause serious misunderstandings or losses sometimes, particularly during business negotiations. To sum up, to foster easy understanding and efficient communication, a standard language, such as Mandarian, need to be used in public. And dialects are not acceptable in public areas but in private situations.
