Dialects Are Acceptable in Public Places Recently, it becomes a hot topic about whether dialects are acceptable in public places, which aroused extensive attention among the public.Many people questioned that the use of dialects in the public will hinder the promotion of mandarin. As for my part, this kind of worry is ridiculous, because it is not contradictory to speak dialects and mandarin at the same time in the public. First of all, we should understand that, the function of language is to communicate.If the language cant be used to communicate, then it is dead. Therefore, whether to speak mandarin is not the point but whether people can take advantage of a language to contact with others. Besides,it is universally acknowledged that there are still many people,especially the elder people,who get used of speaking dialects .To these people, speaking or even understanding mandarin is difficult,thus they eager the allowance to speak dialects in the public places, and expect someone speaking the dialects could tell them where to go when whey are lost in the bus stations or the hospitals.Finally,dialects are also a kind of culture, which should be protected rather than forbad. Recently,government has taken measures to protect these priceless languages, such as encouraging students to learn dialects. Nevertheless, none learning is superior to practicing. As a whole, dialects is the precious part of Chinese culture, should and must be acceptable in public places.
