I lived in town with my grandmother until i went to primary school. So, I spoke dialect for many years. However, when I went college, I think I was supposed to talk with my classmates by putonghua. So I definetly support the idea that dialect are not acceptable in public places. There will be several points to be responsible for my thoughts. Just like in the college, not only just students, but also teachers come from so many different places, such as Hunan, Hubei, Heilongjiang, Tibet or other provinces in China. people will find a large barrier when coumunicating if they talk to each other by their own dialect. and what's more, teacher will not be uderstood by students if they use dialect. Also, if you are a worker, and you are meeting an important client, and you have to persuade him to trust your firm and sign on the contract, it will be a neccessity for you to speak fulently and convince your client. Speaking Putonghua fluently will leave an expression of capacity and smart. As for as i am concerned, dialect can just be spoken when you are talking to your families or at homeland. you had better speak fluent Putonghua in the public place. You can not only just to let yourself be known by others, but also leave an good expression to those you want to leave.
