Should government supply financial support to local film industry? In the past several years, whenever I took my family out to enjoy a weekend, they prefer to seeing foreign films, especially those from the U.S.A. which features huge scene, complicated story, great cost and luxurious stars. Though, the movies produced by the Chinese makers are also listed high or even at the top of the box office, the products from abroad seem more attractive to us. Why so? Through careful analysis on the common characteristics and differences between the two groups of films, I found some reasons for this phenomenon as follows: Firstly, the Chinese movies are not good at story-telling by this kind of audio and visual tool. While the western maker, for example the Disney, is very specialized in story telling. A very obvious case is the Hua Mulan, which tells a story about a girl who took part in the troop in the name of her father. In the army, she acted as a male soldier and finally came home with honor awarded by the royal court. This is a completely Chinese story, but it was not be presented well in China by the Chinese producers. Secondly, another reason for people to like the overseas pictures, is that they can bring them with more exotic and sometimes eye opening effects which may impress them deeply. For instance, each of the series of James Bond 007 can display very fresh and utterly attractive views and scenarios from different corners of the world. Anyway, as a citizenship of a open-minded nation, Chinese people, while welcoming the foreign cultural commodities, all hope to see a profound improvement of our national films industry. Before opening to the outside world in 1970s, China not only was short of capital to support this industry, but also was limited by its close-minded tradition. Now, more than 30 years later, China, as the 2nd world economy, has the financial power and vision and ambition to produce its own world-class films. But, it seems that the films which now can be present to the international competition arena are those invested by the private investors. They are brave enough to take risks. Where are those films financed by the national organizations? Do we really need the investment from the state owned financial units? Absolutely needed. The films invested by the private capitalists are mainly focused on commercial purpose(of course, not only so, some of them have really good social effect). Therefore, the state owned financial units must shoulder the responsibility to propagate the national spirits and traditional culture which is uniquely standing out among the world nations. Once they can illustrate to the world our nation’s rich and splendid cultural collection, the whole world will be stunned and its commercial return will also be surprising.
