Before 1975, Morrison did not pay any attention in the western literary field. However, with the book of The Bluest Eye was published, Morrison’s novel has become more and more popular, especially the book of Beloved in readers and critics. The studies on Beloved abroad also classified into three aspects: the maternal love, the cruel nature of slavery, the process of the black women pursued self-worth. Peter J.Capuano (1992) in the book of Black Issues Book Review believes that compared to the black male and the society, the black women also have their inherent value and the right of exist with respect to man. Under racial discrimination of societies and sex discrimination, black women psychologically distorted. However, they still do not give up to discovering their own identity. The maternal love is a unique perspective in Beloved. Cynthia Davis (1995) exposes of female experience, he points out that the black woman slave behavior reflects the extreme love. Under the slavery, the only option for black mother is killing her daughter to protect her from the class oppression. In the cruel nature of slavery, many scholars focus on the situation of the black in the white society, they emphasis on racial problems existed in the novel. For example: in Toni Morrison:The Struggle to Depict the Black Figure on the White Page, the author Timothy B. Powell (1990) points out that black people did not have free will and any civil right during that specific time period. However, with the description by Morrison, she brings a vivid image of black people who suffering in that situation. This will raise public concern of racism and sexual discrimination. Beloved has attracted more and more scholars to expose for both home and abroad. However, the application of critical approaches in the study of Beloved at home and abroad is not entirely the same in some perspectives. With the time goes, they also have gradually developed many new theories from the novel. For example, Deborah Ayer Sitter explains Beloved from psychological perspective. Compared to the studies of home and the studies of abroad, Most of them are the study on the themes and the artistic features of Beloved. So, there is still some big space where we can explore in the novel. In the new study in recent years, many scholars start to focus on the identities of Beloved. For instance, Wendy Harding and Jacky Martin, they study Beloved's identities from the black's past. However, they just explore the identities of Beloved in the real world, Sethe’s dead daughter, a survivor from the trade of slavery. Therefore, to explore the spiritual identities of Beloved is meaningful to the research of this novel.
