In this paper, we discuss the real identities—Sethe’s daughter and a survivor from the trade of slavery, and Beloved’s spiritual identities—Sethe’s mother and Denver’s guider. It reveals the cruel nature of black slavery and the great physical and psychological harm caused by the black and the awakening of the spirit of the American black in slavery and the pursuit of independent spirit.
