John Cheever reveals suburbia’s darker side in his short story “The Country Husband” and shows the spirit trap of the middle class. He conveys Francis’s emotional conflicts and the crisis of affiliation to us by a realistic style. From this story, we can sense the appearance of the middle class people and his inner conflicts, loneliness and fear. John Cheever discussed the conflict between the desire and civilization. He satirizes the superficial peace of suburbia and affirms the impulse that civilized people want to feel reborn by immersing a simple and natural life. Francis is tired of such kind of life: one must maintain a respectable appearance, speak kindly to the neighbors, and accept an adequate amount of the right type of social invitations. Francis’s marriage with Julia was on the ropes. He can’t get rid of his lassitude and nihility at home, and he lost the sense of presence because of the distance between him and his family. He has an affair with Anne and the imagination of love gives him the courage to do something against the reality. He argues with his wife and even slaps her, which leads to the leave of his wife. His pursuit in love is just an illusory satisfaction, which obviously can’t fill up the hollow of his frustrated soul. It’s pathetic. All in all, it’s not just a short story that satirize the boring life of the middle class after war, but John Cheever’s reflection on grander American values, industrial civilization and idyllic ideal.
