Recently, a complaint latter about the mandatory maths classes from an English major has aroused a heated debate. The issue of whether English majors study maths or not has aroused considerable controversy. Advocates of mathematics learning claims that English majors study maths which can develop a good skill of data collection and analysis. For the sake of further education and future job-hunting, this is necessary for English majors. Others, however, argue that English majors are poor in mathematics, as a result, they are likely to fail to this course. Mathematics just increase a burden on them. Weighing both the merits and demerits of English majors study maths, I claim that mathematics should be taught to English majors. First of all, studying math brings students the skin of logical thinking and helps them develop a financial awareness. English majors spend almost 90% of their study time only in English and so on. From day to day they break the balance the arts and science. Their logical thinking becomes weaker and weaker. The way of their thinking maybe simplify. Likewise, on account of avoiding mathematics, English majors will fail to calculate. To public’s worried, dealing with budgets, bank saving will get them into trouble. Taking into account all these factors, the necessity of mathematics for English majors should draw universities’ related teachers’ attention.
