Advertising is quite common nowadays on TV, radio andnewspaper all over the world. Yet it is argued by someone that advertisingactually exerts more negative influence on people’s lives. My view is that oneshould hold a balanced understanding of ads. First, advertising is the essential tool that bridges thedemand and supply in the market. Most business ads on TV provide usefulvaluable information to target audiences, making it easier for them to comparedifferent products’ quality and function. Also, many companies rely on ads topromote their products, boost sales, make profits and build brand images. Moreover, there are some public service advertisings aimingat providing helpless people essential food, clothes and education. As well-knowncelebrities are invited to perform these ads, the influence on audiences is enormous,which is surely beneficial to the whole society and public; to be precise, itimplicitly raises public’s awareness of helping the poor. Still, there is a dark side to this picture: someadvertisements only claim a product’s advantages vaguely and purposely ignoresome shortage of it. These ads are usually too exaggerated and misleading to public.Furthermore, due to the huge costs spent on ads and celebrities, these productsare often more expensive than their own values and the gap is exactly whereconsumers pay for. In summary, ads do play an important role in transmittingbasic information of products and serve some public services. But governmentauthorities should enforce stricter standards and regulations on advertisingindustry to avoid misleading ads and protect public’s privacy and essentialrights.
