In this memo, the speaker argues that West Meria Public Health Council recommend the daily use of Ichthaid as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism, by citing the study indicating that in nearby East Meria people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds attributing to the high consumption of fish. Elaborate considered, whereas, this argument is ridiculous in several aspects and thus logically unreliable. At first glance, the study, failing to give us a series of detailed information, is quite dubious here. Since the sample size of the people surveyed is missing, it is unfair to say that the result of the study is relatively representative. Moreover, the speaker is unable to mention the background of the select group of the survey, so here comes the possibility that a large amount of people do not come to visit the doctor when they catch a cold, which makes the conclusion of the study unreliable. Furthermore, the arguer hastily comes to a conclusion that eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Without careful deduction, the speaker overlooks a large variety of other factors which may help to diminish the chance of falling colds. It is perhaps that people in East Meria have a good living habit which is an effective way of preventing cold, such as drinking a bottle of boiled water before going to bed. Or there is a good chance that people in the East Meria keep going to swimming after supper and thus they keep the body fit. All to all, it is unfair to say that eating a substantial amount of fish is a direct factor of cold prevention. However, even the forgoing assumptions come into existence, the fact colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work is still doubtable. To be the most common illness, it is of a great possibility that people like to use colds to be an excuse for being absent. With regard to this cheating fact, it is unsafe to correlate the colds with the most cases of absences from school and work. Finally, the arguer makes a seemingly normal analogy of the situation in West Meria and East Meria, regarding that the two areas share a lot of similarities. Carefully scrutinized, however, various kinds of differences between them have been overlooked. For one thing, in West Meria, it is recommended to eat Ichthaid which is a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil. While in East Meria, it is merely the fish as a whole to be consumed. Moreover, there exists the likelihood that the average age of the population in two regions is dissimilar. For instance, majority of the residents in Ease Meria are oldsters which are apt to illness as a result. Hence, with elaborate consideration, it is unreliable for the arguer to draw such an unreasonable conclusion aiming to persuade the West Meria inhabitants to have Ichthaid everyday. To make a conclusion, it is unjust for the arguer to make such recommendation to ask the West Meria people to use daily Ichthaid in order to reduce the chance of catching colds so as to reduce the absenteeism in school and job. To strengthen the argument, the arguer should not only give us a reliable survey, but also take other probable factors into account.
