The Beauty of Science and Art What is the role that science and art play in our daily life? Some argue that the essence of science is to reassure while the significance of art is to upset. To some degree, this view is reasonable since it is the technological achievements like cellphones and air conditioners that meet our basic demands, facilitate our daily life and make sure that we have a cozy life. Besides, the softest parts of our hearts tend to be stirred by a line in some poems or the lyrics of a song. Nevertheless, both science and art are not uni-dimensional. The achievements made in technology also serve as a medium through which we are able to perceive the world better and as a motivation to inspire us to make more breakthroughs. As for art, the reflection of human’s wisdom and imagination, it also enlightens us and may contribute to the promotion of the society in its way. The achievements of technology assist us in having a better understanding of the world. With the invention of the telescope, the planets far away from the earth can be seen clearly and by then they are not just shining points to us any longer; with the advent of the the law of gravity, we will not be puzzled as to why we will fall back on the earth no matter how high we jump; the discovery of the genetic mutation explains how the tumors take its origin. In this regard, without the development of science and technology, we would be still ignorant of how the species evolves and how the earth develops. Moreover, technological developments also inspire us to conduct more research so as to fuel the scientific progress. For example, being motivated by the invention of Eniac, the first electronic computer, the researchers had worked around the clock for ages and finally invented the laps and personal computers nowadays. What’s more, gene recombination program also acts as an incentive to encourage scientists to cure some once incurable diseases. Thus the previous achievements of science and technology can not only provide reference to later studies but also push them to make breakthroughs. As for art, depressing and gloomy as it is sometimes, it may also be inspiring and set people thinking. Take “Ode to the West Wind”, one of Shelley’s renowned poems, for example. The most famous sentence “if winter comes, can spring be far behind?” encourages us to face up to the difficulties and evils since the “old world” would eventually wither and be replaced by a new and hopeful one. King Lear, one of four-great-tragedies, makes us distinguish hypocrisy from true love while the song “Spirit Indestructible” sung by Nelly Kim Furtado, one of the most prominent Canadian female singers, sets us to make through the pities in our life. In all probability we are emboldened by the lyrics of an inspiring song and enlightened by a passage of a novel. As songs, poems and novels may inspire us, they can also make a contribution to the social progress. Novels, especially fictions tend to be abundant in bright ideas, reflection of human’s hope and desire, which may encourage the scientists to turn them to be true. In ancient times, teleportation, matter being decomposed at one place and recreated at another, is a fantasy, but with the invention of high-speed train and airplane, to cover hundreds of miles an hour is no longer a bizarrerie. In brief, both science and art are blessed gift for humans, science making sure that we have a cosy life and inspiring us to make more breakthroughs, and art inspiring us and promoting social progress. Therefore, we are expected to endeavor to make them vigorous and prosperous, which will eventually benefit us in return.
