The electronic communication seems to take the place of face-to face contact in this picture above. Andy's dad is typing to "talk" to her, hoping she would come downstairs for eating. Absolutely, the Internet has totally changed most people's lives. It's a real big bang to human society, and this revolution does mean a lot. But if it means that electronic communication is more valuable to replace our conditional face-to-face way? Well, I definitely disagree with that. To be honest, communicating with others face to face has a long history and it actually made difference when communication became the most important thing in our daily life. Surely, Internet does play an important part in this environment, It's a type of improvement, but never a substitution.
