Are Dialects Just as Acceptable in Public Places? As an internal part of a region's culture, dialects cannot be abandoned in the process of social development. But as opposed to the opinion of using dialects in public places, I do think it would be better for us to find another means of passing forward dialects. China is a large country with so many dialects which are greatly different from each other. Therefore it is impossible for one to get to know all those dialects, that is to say, without a common standard language-Mandarin, we would face a great quantity of problems in daily exchanges. My main reason is that, as we cannot get to the other side of a river without a bridge so no one can communicate with another smoothly without a shared language. With the development of economic globalization and the implementation of reform andopening up, it is no more rare for us to see foreigners in bus station, cinema and other public places. How could they live comfortable with so many dalects to learn. In addition, more and more exchange students come to China for improving their language skills. What a big difficulty they would be caught in without a common Chinese language to learn. Another reason is that mandarin does really count in the achievement of national harmony. The fact is that China has many ethnic minorities, and each has its own language. That is why a shared language is the basis of inter-minority exchanges. Since we can communicate with each other, we are able to know more about and learn from another one. In the process of communication, the relations among those minorities are enhanced, thus we could enjoy a more and more harmonious life. All in all, dialects play a vital role in a nation's development, but it is unwise to use them in public areas. We can speak dialects in our families or with our neighboring friends, nevertheless, a shared language is necessary for us to communicate and broadcast news in public places.
