Hundreds of years ago, confronting with a perplexing situation, Hamlet asks himself—“To be or not to be. That is a question.” Every time I watch that scene, I am touched by his confusing emotions. However, students nowadays have such spiritual state as well. The trouble is that they don’t know whether it’s better to learn by doing or by reading. Presently, with the appearance of the Internet, social media and the press, students are equipped with large number of reading materials, whether in paper or in e-form. For some people, the importance of learning by doing is replaced by reading. Personally speaking, their idea is not convincible, for learning by doing provides students with more foundational knowledge, innovative thoughts. Firstly, compared with sitting in front of a desk poring over books, going outside or doing experiment offers students opportunities to have deeper understanding about rigid knowledge. Thus, students’ passion will be aroused. Just take me as an example. Being an art student never hinder my interest in chemistry. However, my interest is ignited by accident. Virtually, it was not until an experimental class that I started to take this subject seriously. For me, the beauty of chemistry consists in various experiments that display flaming fires, dazzling light and splendid colors. I still remembered the first time I investigated the successful chemical reaction done by me. I just stood there, with exciting tears sparkling in my eyes and a proud heart throbbing in my body. What a fantastic experience to watch the rigid knowledge becoming vivid by my hands. Since then, I studied chemistry twice as hard. Although I am an art student, my score in chemistry is good enough to be a science student. See? An experiment, or close experience with knowledge may change a student’s opinion about tedious classes. Besides, learning by doing gives students incentive to create and imagine, which may lead to some meaningful conjecture. It was impossible to imagine before finding the gravity, how many books Newton had read. Armed with a genius head, he must read various masterpieces from the elder generation. However, it was a kick by apple that made him found the gravity which markers a new epoch. This story does certainly demonstrate the importance of doing. It seems like that students minds are easily limited by reading materials. However, if they are allowed to learn by doing, a sequel to this may be a big discovery. Last but not least, among the hustle and bustle of modern life, it’s difficult to regulate all reading materials to have right orientation. The incessant production of vulgar and coarse books, newspaper and films may confuse students, guiding them to a wrong road.
