Is the Young Generation be More Selfish than before? Recently, an English newspaper is running a heated discussion on whether young university students in China are more self-centered and unsympathetic than were previous generations. Many complain that young university students seldom show sympathy to others, especially when their own benefits are threatened, while some suppose that students take their family members and friends into consideration by putting their care into actions instead of speaking out directly. For my own part, I believe that students are becoming more and more self-centered according to my experiences. One is that more young people just concentrate on themselves rather than others. For example, students in my university often use books in the library without considering others. Every time when I borrow books from library, I am disappointed with poor books especially popular ones, of which some pages are folded, some are missing, some are covered with graffiti, some are even damaged. As they use these books, they seldom consider others’ feeling when they get such a dirty and incomplete book. The other is that more young people have no consciousness to help others. Once I was on a bus which was crowded, I saw an old woman with a child grasped the handle difficultly, while a young student near her just looked out the window, ears stuffed with headphones. It seemed that he never saw the old woman near him. The young generation always have this or that reasons to refuse. Some may say I am not well today; some may say I am so tired because of the heavy bag. “help” this word never comes into their mind. What a pity yet an undeniable reality! In conclusion, it is necessary for young university students to pay more attention to themselves because of more and more fierce competition, which does not mean they need not to care about others and help others. The best way to improve this situation I suppose is to cultivate their sense of responsibility and have a sympathetic heart to others.
