Several years ago, some universities in China demanded all students who study in the university should take basic science courses, even with the students whose major is literature or philosophy. Since then, the issue of whether students should learn basic science courses regardless of their field of study has been aroused and caused grave concerns. Concerning this, an increasing number of people give there priority to the viewpoint that all students should take basic science courses like math. Nevertheless, others still reckon that learning courses that unrelated to one’s major is unnecessary. From my point of view, I strongly support that students should learn more about basic science, for it will benefit us not only mentally but to future study. First and foremost, basic sciences are collections of knowledge that guide the direction of development of our society nowadays. In the trend of globalization and knowledge-exploding, it is indispensable for college students to broaden storage of knowledge and to make it clear about the direction of social progress. Learning more about basic science provided a chance to better enlarge knowledge storage and understand regulation of society development. According the data released by a tank in Beijing, some 85% of students who learned basic science courses hold that they are satisfied after taking courses which may influence their decision when faced to choices relating to society and future development. To add more credibility, learning more basic science courses is not meant to learn what unrelated to one’s major, but to obtain some basic knowledge and then use them in daily life. This point is best illustrated with the example of when facing with dangerous of fire when using a pot, man who learnt chemistry before will deal with such accident by putting the cover to the pot. To learn more about math will benefit to one’s logic thinking; to learn more about biology can acquire more knowledge about structure of one’s body and catch the importance of a healthy life; to study chemistry may improve the ability of distinguishing elements of food which improve sense of nutrition-balance. All these provide us with abundant knowledges that give us a corking chance embracing a more safe and convenient life. Last but not the least, although some students may argue that there is no enough time to learn these courses, for it is not easy to deal with all their major courses very well. While I think compared with narrowing our knowledge by studying in one field continuously, to learn more about basic science courses broadens our eyesight and transfer us to be a multi-disciplinary talents. According to a recent survey conducted by Peiking University, about 75% of employers give the preference to students who learn well in more than one fields. To put it into a nutshell, in this complex world, the issue cannot be given a word to too randomly. However, based on the reasons discussed above, the conclusion can be safely drawn that campus students should learn basic courses no matter what their field of study is.
