There are many differences between English and Chinese idioms, which are mainly reflected in different living habits, modes of production and ecological environment. The most typical example is the “狗”. It represents different meanings in Chinese and English in two national cultural traditions. Most idioms related to dogs in China is a derogatory word, such as“狐朋狗友”, “狗急跳墙”, “狗腿子”, “狗眼看人低” and so on. In recent years, the number of pet dogs has increased, but the dog as a derogatory image is still deeply rooted in China’s five thousand years of Chinese language and cultural. On the contrary, in western countries, dog could be taken as doorkeeper or used to hunt as well as human pet, friend or partner. In English language, most of idioms about dog contain dual sense. Especially in Europe and the United States, they treat the dog as the most loyal partner, so they often use compliment words to describe the dog. For example, “a lucky dog (幸运儿) ”, “Every dog has his day ( 每个人都有得意之时)”, “To work like a dog(拼命的工作)”, “love me, love my dog(爱屋及乌)”. From above off, the meaning of dog differentiates greatly between Chinese and English, which make some trouble in the inter-translation of the idioms.
