Today is the 21 Century, an era of globalization and internationalization. Language is one of the achievements of human civilization, where there are people, there will be language and communication. Language is a cultural part, and is playing the vital role to the culture. Some sociologists even believe that language is the cornerstone of cultural. However, language and culture are closely connected. On the one hand, language is part of culture and carrier of culture. On the other hand, culture has great influence on language. What is culture? Well, in fact, according to the dictionary, culture refers to the sum of material wealth and spiritual wealth created in the process of human society life. Many scholars have shown their ideals from a broad perspective. The American anthropologist Crookhon, who is the “father of modern cultural”, has defined cultural as a system of life-style created in history. Idioms are unique and fixed expressions which are formed in using a language. Since every country has their own national history, religious beliefs, customs, and geographical differences, English and Chinese idioms carry different national cultural characteristics and cultural information. With the increasing frequency of cultural exchange and the rise of communication theory. Traditional translation study views translation as a closed process of transformation between two languages and just studies it from a pure linguistic level, but ignores the cultural factors involved in it. With the cultural turn in 1970s, translation studies has changed it’s course from linguistic lever to a broader and deeper level. Therefore, the limitation in translation study is revealed “For a truly successful translation, it is more important to get familiar with the two cultures than to master the two languages, because the words are meaningful only in the cultural context in which they function” (Nida, 2001:82). “The academic circles have reached an agreement that translation is no longer seen as the change of language of symbol, but the change of cultural modes” (GuoJianzhong, 2000:173). Most idioms are vivid, carrying strong local color or national features. If language is the minor of culture, idioms are the essence of language and the quintessence of culture. Therefore, the quality of translation largely depends on the translation of idioms. This paper covers four parts. Chapter one is the review of literature, focusing on the major studies in this field including the study on the definition of idioms and the features of idioms. Chapter two mainly introduced the cultural differences in the translation of idioms. Chapter three present four translation methods figure out the cultural differences in the translation of idioms. Then, it comes to the conclusion.
