I don't think dialects are acceptable in public places. Though dialects are important in our culture, but it is not appropriate to speak dialects in public places. As more and more people leave their homes for higher education or for good job opportunities, it is difficult for them to understand the local dialects when they are in a new city. If they can't understand the local dialects, they may have difficulty in their studies and jobs.Though they can learn to speak the dialects, but it will take a lot of time. And some people work in this city for a period of time, and then move to another city, so it is not convenient for them to master the dialects. So, why don't they say mandarian? Meanwhile , as more and more foreigners come to China, it is also important for them to learn to speak mandarian, because mandarian is widely used in the country, while, dailects are not, they can only been understood by people in certain districts. Foreingers come to China often want to know more about the country, the languange, the culture... So it is useful and convenient for them to speak mandarian. When speak dialects, someone maybe rudely when they are angry, but it is hard to be rude when they speak mandarian. So , I think dialects are not acceptable in public places, as it is not convenient for people from different places to communicate with each other.
