Education Between China and the United States Education is more and more important in the 21st century, and parents attach great importance to their children’s education. For many countries, talent is the national competition. In my opinion, countries began to pay more attention to education because they want their national citizens have cultural knowledge that is helpful for national development. Professor Geert Hofstede is the founder of comparative studies of different cultural values. Different countries have different definitions of power distance in the Hofstede website, For example, the cultural value of power distance is explained differently for China and the United States “In China, power distance is defined as the extent to which the less powerful members of institutions and organisations within a country expect and accept that power is distributed unequally.” This cultural value is defined slightly differently for the United States. “In the United States, power being defined as the degree to which a person is able to influence other people’s ideas and behavior.” Chinese power distance has a high PD score of 80 and the United States has a low PD score of 40. In other words, the Chinese have a comparatively large power distance than the Americans. As for me, power distance in China and the United States is reflected in parents, schools and governments, all of which play important roles in education. Parents are children’s first teachers, and their behavior affect their children’s intelligence. Parents have a sense of authority, and they feel that children must obey their parents and they will not ask their children’s opinions about contradictions because they think their opinions are all correct. However, in my observation some American parents respect their children's choices and communicate with them to develop their ability to think for themselves. Parents in both countries are very different in character. Chinese parents and children rely on each other, and parents raise their children to honor their parents. Most Chinese parents and children live in close dependence on each other. Chinese parents and their children will change the power distance along with the change of age; parents are the leaders when their children are young and children are the leaders when their parents are old. In my opinion, American parents and children are equal to each other and are independent individuals. Children grow up not to depend on their parents, and they have the ability to shoulder their own costs. Parents do not need support form their children when they are old. According to Hofstede, “Chinese individuals are influenced by formal authority and sanctions and are in general optimistic about people’s capacity for leadership and initiative.” High power distance between parents and children in China means that parents make major decisions and children accept and execute those decisions. The low power distance between parents and children in the United States means that parents are not widely involved in decisions that affect their children’s behavior after they become adults. Schools’ teaching methods play a big part in the development of children. The teaching methodology is rigorous in China, but the teaching methodology is unrestricted in the United States. From the first day of school, Chinese students have a lot of complicated school rules and regulations. Some high schools are strict with students’ appearance; students need to wear a uniform every school day, male students can not have long hair, and students can not have a boyfriend or girlfriend even in high school. On the contrary, there are not too many restrictions in American high schools. Their campus atmosphere is pleasant, and the schools often hold many activities for students. Moreover, China’s teaching methodology attaches importance to the results of a question, and United States teaching methodology attaches importance to the process of a question. The relationship between students and teachers is very important. In China, the teacher is the authority in students’ minds, and students always believe that their teacher’s answer is correct. In my experience, the American teacher prefer to ask students questions and get the answer from the students’ opinions. They will be happy if students find mistakes from their teaching. Consequently, Chinese students focus on authority and American students pursue truth due to their different school teaching methods. In China, the teacher is the leader and the student is the subordinate, whereas in the United states teachers do not have an obvious superior-subordinate relationship and the teacher is a guide that directs to solve their problems on their own. Government supposed to revise the educational system that can more suit the development of the country. Chinese education implement nine years of compulsory education for citizens, and American education implement 12 years of education for citizens. Even though china have the compulsory education, but they have urban-rural gap in education. The teachers in urban have higher wages than rural teachers, and the students of urban schools enjoy a better education than the rural students. Also, some poor rural families in China have very little power to further their children’s education because they live in remote mountainous areas of economic underdevelopment. In my point of view, the urban-rural gap is short in the American education system. Students enjoy equal education, and the teachers receive due wages. Moreover, parents have power to change the system, and they can express their view to the government. With the increasing international competition, talent training and competition become the focus; world education is constantly changing and the educational system constant revise and improve. China’s education is constantly undergoing reform and innovation; consequently, the Chinese government set a goal for the next ten years to perfect education system. The President of the United States proposed to promote policy to protect the American people's learning and work opportunities, and the president wants to improve the number of educated students and the level of working education.
