As we all known, there are countless dialects in China, some of which known to me, while the majority of which are unknown. In public places, most of us speak standard Putonghua in order to be better understand. However, when we want to show the closeness with our relatives, we prefer dialects. From the point of my view, dialects can be acceptable in public places. First of all, dialect is a symble of hometown. Many people leave their original hometown for bigger cities to find better job and chances. As a result, it is hard to find a city without workers from other places especially in metropolis. In public places such as station, restaurant and shopping mall, we usually hear people speak dialects. If we prohibit them speaking dialects, it is absolutely an offense. When they use their native language, they feel as at home, which can give them a sense of belonging even in a strange city. Moreover, it is hard to enforce everyone to use one standard language. Although speaking standard language is well understood by others, it is difficult to really achieve the goal. All in all, dialect is a production of cultural variety which can show the tolerance of our nation. We should accept different dialects in public places.
