According to James Truslow Adams, the definition of American Dream is "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth. In my opinion,American Dream shows Americans’ belief of equality, as long as you have talent and work hard enough, everyone can be successful and get happiness. However, is American Dream truly equal to everyone? Let’s find the answer in African Americans’ American Dream. For African Americans, they do get chance to realize their American Dream as other Americans. In The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris is a salesman who never had received a good education and struggled to make ends meet by selling medical machine. However, he stood out from many interns and became the only official broker in the company. He changed his life through his brilliant intelligence and hard work. His poor education resulted from his birth didn’t affect his chance of realizing his American Dream in the end. However, those African Americans from a poor family background may face more obstacles or even fail to realize their dreams. In The Blind Side, Michael Ore has lower IQ than normal child and his mother was a drug addict. Before he met the Tuohy, he was . Though he had an advantage over others in football, if he hadn’t been adopted by the Tuohy he would never had the chance to show his talent in football nor been admitted by top university. In conclusion, the opportunity of realizing American Dream is open but not equal to everyone. For some like African Americans may face more obstacles than other in the way of pursuing their dream. Social class or circumstances of birth though can’t decide the result influence the chance more or less. However, there’s no doubt that personal efforts play a significant role, no one can achieve their American Dream without hard work.
