An analysis of Santiago’s imagine in the old man and the sea 1.The introduction The old man and sea, which is known as one of the milestone books in American history, was created by the famous American writer Ernest Miller Hemingway in 1952. Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American journalist, novelist, short-story writer, and noted sportsman. His economical and understated style—which he termed the iceberg theory—had a strong influence on20th-century fiction, while his adventurous lifestyle and his public image brought him admiration from later generations. 2.The background 2.1 The American society at that time At that time, the American has just went through the world war I, some teenagers driven by fanatical militarism, joined in the army and went to the front line of world war I hopefully. However, the ruthlessness left deep impression both on their mind and body. And the general felt helpless with the loss of hope for life and the disappointment for the world. So as they were called the lost generation. And what’s more, the story was adapted by the real thing which had happened. 2.2 Hemingway’s life experience According to Hemingway’s own life experience, after he took part in world war II, he emigrated to Cuba and met the old fisherman Gregorio Fuentes. In 1930, Hemingway's ship was killed in a storm, and Fuentes rescued him. Since then, Hemingway and Fuentes have forged a deep friendship, and often go fishing together. In 1936, Fuentes went out to sea and caught a big fish, but because the fish was too big, it dragged on for a long time at sea. As a result, he was attacked by sharks on his way home, leaving only a skeleton on his way back. With this experience, Hemingway created The old man and sea. 3 The positive character of Santiago 3.1 Santiago’s confidence and courage In the beginning of the novel, the old, poor man Santiago didn't get a fish in a raw for 82 days. However, he refused to give up and drove a small boat alone, going deep into the sea to catch fish, which is enough to show the confidence of the old man. His determination, or his strong sense of purpose, to go out on the ocean every day shows great fortitude and a lot of courage, or bravery. He believes that he'll be successful every time he heads out onto the ocean. It doesn't matter to him what others say or do. He's faced this type of adversity before, going eighty seven days before catching a fish. Then he had three weeks of nothing but big fish. After the hard work, the old man finally caught a big marlin. However, the fish was so big that the old man alone could hardly catch it. But the old man insisted to fight with the ferocious big fish, who struggled desperately and hit back with his huge body against the boat. On that condition, Small boats might easily be knocked over by the big fish and sank to the bottom of the sea. However, the old man didn’t give up. He risked his life to kill and catch the fish by all means. And this shows the courage of Santiago. 3.2 Santiago’s love of nature and respect for life In the novel, we can find many plots which reflect Santiago’s love of nature and respect for life. First of all, he was close to nature and live in harmony with it. Before he sailed to the sea, he had a beautiful dream. In the dream, he dreamed of beautiful beaches, mountains and lions in ancient Africa. Through the old man's dream, we can see his inner consciousness of wanting to live in harmony with nature. 3.3 Expectation for the future After 84 days’ sailing without any gain, Santiago went to sea determinedly, not only with the hope of good luck after the defeat, but also for Manolin, and for himself, who wanted to regain the glory of the past. So he overcame all denials of fate and returned to the trust of his declarers. Despite his poverty, he never gave up hope of life. The love and expectation for life never faded away in his mind. 4 Complement of Santiago’s character 4.1 Santiago as a “code hero” Santiago is a classic example of a Code Hero, a man of action who accepts death as a part of life, possesses a high degree of skill, and is in a constant state of alertness, having trouble sleeping or resting. 4.2 Santiago’s over aggression 5 Conclusion [1]Abrams.
