Cultural Empathy Gone in Mulan 'Mountains and rivers on any foreign land, with wind and moon under the same heaven stand', which is labeled on a batch of materials donated from our neighbor, Japan, when the coronavirus pandemic burst. Such a poetic sentence drew amounts of Chinese cultural empathy. It is a deep perception of acknowledgement between similar groups with parallel cultural backgrounds, they can create excellent works to hit the ground running. The Disney movie, Mulan, lately hailed much controversies in domestic market, but the very lack of cultural empathy in this transcultural movie caused destructive influence. Such three ways in which the effects are in the aesthetic difference, the inappropriate language, furthermore the expression of core values. From one aspect that is the aesthetic differences about makeup and costume can signify the lack of cultural empathy. The makeup of actresses with exaggerated blush and yellow forehead was widely made for emoticons as soon as the trailer was released, some foreigners even joked about why Mulan wore the Huawei logo. The imbalance of makeup usage rendered a totally coarse impression, especially compared to the identical figure made by a TV show, National Treasures, Mulan suspiciously defamed China. The costume was also roasted that aggravated the grace of Chinese classical minimalism. Not only were the cheap and excessive elements added, but also the soldiers' armor looked like Japanese Tabard, which offended most Chinese in such a way that in-depth treatment of Chinese culture was not necessary. We can also see this deficiency in the inappropriate language. It is true, indeed, that Disney has attached much importance to the globally issued movie, full English dialogues may be in accord with international promotion. However, the background sound was filled with Chinese murmur, those parts were where audiences removed off the story of movie. The translation of some literary languages used in ancient China, on the other hand, was too rigid to convey its pure meaning. More impressively, there is a scene of two rabbits alongside running on the grass just intending to prove that they cannot distinguish their genders. Without sufficient cultural empathy, the subject of what kind of core values, Mulan, wants to convey is ambiguous. What doesn't reveal is how the war and army affect Mulan's mental attitude. Some people may be obsessed with the charm of Mulan's unstoppable super power, but most rational audiences cannot witness her growth about how she step by step becomes a heroine rather than owning unnatural strength at the beginning. Another weird problem is that women must be superior compared to the power and intelligence that can be exerted by men, evidently both Chinese and audiences overseas don't buy it. Culture empathy is rooted in mutual understanding and toleration in diversity. Disney companies should put more focus on chasing connotation refining rather than being blind to profit-oriented. We should also tell a good Chinese story to promote more valuable communication. Only in this way can we exert an international voice to expand our traditional Chinese culture.
