Collocation is the company an English word keeps, which refers to the occurrence of two or more words within a short space of each other in a text. According to how substitutable the words are, collocation may be classified into three types: free combinations, restricted collocations and idioms. Free combinations are weak collocations of which words can be replaced by many other alternatives. Restricted collocations are more fixed than free combinations, and words in restricted collocations can not easily be replaced by other alternatives. Restricted collocations may be generally divided into seven types according to the part of speech: adjective and noun, noun and noun, verb and noun, noun and verb, verb and adverb, adverb and adjective, adverb and verb. Idioms are a group of words that function as a fixed unit with a special meaning, which may be established by convention and rarely have any other alternatives. Collocation can help non-native speaker express more smoothly and effectively and distinguish between idiomatically appropriate and inappropriate expressions, and their expressions will sound like native speakers.
