Nowadays, thrift has triggered a flurry of discussion among the general public of whether thrift is a boon or a bane. Some individuals assert that it is no necessary to be thrifty, long gone are the days when people lived frugally to offset their small salary. On the contrary, other naysayers forcefully oppose their proposition, alleging that thrift is the best way to foster a harmonious eco-friendly society. In my point, I quite agree with the latter for the following two aspects. For one thing, both dramatic economy and frugality are employed to propel the development of society, neither of which can be discarded. There is no denying that by grace of the development of high technology and progress of society, we obtain a world of plenty where material-related desires can be punctually satisfied whenever and wherever we are. Yet, if the use were relentlessly and recklessly disposed before being recycled. Admittedly, we are at the peril of facing a throw-away society, be it sustainable or harmonious. For another, thrift is not merely a social standard, but also a mighty armament to curb consumerism, with the latter being more intangible and subtle. People are likely to be driven into a vicious cycle of squandering as well as trade in old for new. While, other circumstance being eminent, thus, the vanity and emptiness generated by consumerism often pales when facing thrift we used to despise. Carving for the new is a habit deeply rooted in our human nature, which also has been fully illustrated and taken advantages by present sellers who propaganda consumerism. From what has been discussed above, the importance of thrift can’t be overstated. Only when we treat thrift as seriously as it deserves to be treated will we take the first step toward the elimination of extravagant climate.
