Make a life rather than make a living. This is what I learnt from Professor Chunbai Zhang, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, when I took his translation class. He taught us to follow our heart and make our life meaningful rather than get lost in it. This sentence got itself carved in my heart and stimulated my original motivation to follow my own zeal and career planning and make this decision: applying for the marketing program in your business school. I feel that the remarkable program in your school can provide the solid stepping stone for me to make a life in the future. As for my study, I have been considering English as a bridge to other fields especially those abroad. Since most of my courses were taught in English, I have been quite familiar with such class atmosphere and I am sure I can well adapt to the class-giving pattern abroad. I must admit I am not good at exams and I feel that test skills don’t benefit much for one’s future development. Instead, I prefer to learn from hands-on practice and reinforce what I learn in class, speaking of my 3 years of tutor to high school students in English, which contributed to the improvement in my major and my interpersonal ability. I feel that studying marketing abroad can provide me with more practical experience and skills rather than useless exam-oriented tricks. One thing that influenced me a great deal was the experience about raising money for my classmate’s father who was diagnosed with severe intestinal cancer and was nearly desperate with extremely high medical costs when our sophomore year began. It was a time when I felt a strong sense of responsibility. As monitor of the class, I was in charge of coordinating with the administrative department of our school and other class leaders. To make the whole donation program more efficient, I gave each class leader his or her individual assignment according to their capability and personality—publicity, paper work, marketing were tackled respectively. Recalling working overnight to make a whole scheme for the program and making speeches from class to class to call for students and teachers to extend a hand, I still feel proud and fulfilled. The charity program got positive responses from the whole School of Foreign Languages and turned out to be a success and temporarily relieved the financial burden of the family of my classmate. Though all of the team members got worn out in the process, we knew we were making a difference; meanwhile, it also made me realize the importance of teamwork and true meaning of leadership, which laid good foundation for my overseas study in the near future. It is worth mentioning that it was a business course I took in University of Hong Kong that made me make up my mind to further my study in this field. In the class, I experienced various lively business simulations and learned many business skills from them. Meanwhile I also accomplished a research titled “Analysis on the reasons of the popularity of HK Disneyland among visiting students” which revealed challenge as well as joy in analyzing a business case, conducting a market research, and dealing with figures. In business school, marketing can provide an opportunity for people like me to further unscramble and understand such business problems. Lately, I have been interned as a part-time marketing specialist in the Sales Department of FAW Service Trading Company, Ltd (Changchun) since August 2013. I have been in charge of routine work, such as building up clients files, dealing with statistics, translations of Import Agencies’ material survey, getting familiar with the enterprise management system. I have also got a better understanding of marketing during this internship and it makes me firmly believe that the programs in your school will be the wisest and the most suitable choice for me, especially Msc Marketing, which attracts me a lot and can bring me a good prospect. While my GPA may not as high as some applicants, my academic record shows a consistent positive. I have the intelligence, determination and ability to achieve success in marketing. My adequate preparation combined with my great zeal, personal qualities, leadership ability and practical experience makes me well suited to face the challenges in the field of marketing. I believe that a period of advanced study at the University of Edinburgh will be a new and valuable beginning of my life-long career in a marketing profession.
