I don't think dialects are acceptable in public places, although they show special culture in some area of China. First, it is not easy to understand the speakers. I have met someone who spoke dialect with me. The talk turned out to be a failure finally. I could follow him, and it took one hour but it ended up with nothing. What's more, dialects may cause misunderstandings, which even cause big economic loss.
