When news came to public that six students who shared a dormitory hired a cleaner to do laundry and cleaning for them, a heated debate has been aroused—should college students hire cleaners? To my way of thinking, this kind of practice must be to blame. What spoilt students they are! Independence is a significant virtue which we teenagers should possess. We enter college not only for acquiring knowledge and skills but also for the goal of fostering the ability of living independently. Most of us have been growing up around parents, so we lack ability of this sort, more or less. The six students on newspaper are the very persons who lack self-care ability terribly. Although the dormitory is so small that there is no need to pay extra attention, those spoilt “baby” still refuse to do cleaning. What a shame that they live an extravagant life with the money providing by their parents! Except for their reliance, parents’ spoiling also has its share of this event. Because of the one-child policy, most of us are the only child and some parents coddle their son or daughter madly. Indulging their children with plenty of pocket money, these parents have made their kids unable to keep normal daily life by themselves. How sorrowful it is! People would easily rest on their past laurels with a life of ease. To avoid this we should always remember that thrift is the traditional virtue of Chinese people. Extolling these noble qualities is far from enough. What is more important to us is whether we will put these mottoes into practice.
