I totally agree with the statement that teachers had a greater influence on young people in the past than they do today. In the past, going to school is the only way for children receiving education as the teacher is the people who grasps the knowledge. As we all know, people in the old days have few opportunities to acquire knowledge as a result of the scarcity of educational resource. And teachers, the elite of a society, determine the distribution of education resource, even one's fate becuse they have powers that knowledge gives them. So in the ancient China, teachers have a high status, therefore, their word and action immensely influence the society. Today, the widespread use of Internet, the vivid television program and the learned parents all can play a teacher's role in education, which, absolutely, weaken the position of teacher. As a saying goes, "Knowledge is power", the implication being that the people who grasp knwoledge may have the ability to affect the development of the society. Obviousli, when more and more tools or peolpe can replace the role of teacher's, the teacher's influence is inevitablely weakened. In summary, the claim that today teacher's influence decrease is plasusible.
