Although friends of all ages can give good advice depending on the situation, I believe that generally the more helpful advice comes from friends who are older. The peers almost always have the same ideas with you, so their advice is less useful that the older friends. On the other hand, older people have experienced more than you have, and they have some wiser advice from they experience and solve problems in proper perspective. Firstly, the problem is that our peers almost always have the same point of view as we do; they don’t necessarily see ahead into the future, but are focused on the here and now. For example, my friend named Jack, who graduated from the high school, may advise you to enlist in the army rather than go to college. Because he was planning to enlist, and so was looking for someone else to validate his own decision. But an older friend, who has perhaps been in the army or graduated from college, is in a much better position to give you advice that will be most useful to your particular situation. Secondly,“Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment.” this quote from U.S. Senator Bob Packwood highlights the reason why advice from older friends is so valuable. Those older than us have already made the mistakes that they are trying to help us avoid. Perhaps it was a love affair that soured—our older friend can tell us what went wrong and what signs to look for in our own interpersonal relationships. Maybe they can tell you of various jobs they had been and which kind of job is more promising…They could offer up some really helpful information for you to find a good job .Meanwhile, someone who is your own age would probably be just as confused as you, since they haven’t experienced these things either. Thirdly, older friends have more experience dealing with relationships, so they know how to deal with others very well. For example, when I was in high school as a basketball team leader, I am usually strict with other team members and result in barrier between us. My older brother, who studies in the Peking University, told me that it is crucial for building good relationship to respect and encourage people. According this advice, I succeeded in getting rid of the obstacle in my team and won the third prize in our high school basketball competition. When it comes to asking for help, it is always better to listen to a more mature point of view. In conclusion, older friends have likely experienced what you’re dealing with, they’ve dealt with more than that, and their advice comes from a place of wisdom, looking at everything in perspective. Thus, it is a more effective and useful way to adopt the older friends’ suggestions than the peers’.
