I totally disagree with the statements that it’s unreasonable for excellent athletes are overpaid. To begin with, people who have athletic talents are very rare. Technique can be learned but talent simply can’t. Sports people like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are so uniquely gifted that we ordinary people can never to be trained to reach comparable level. Obviously, it’s the talent that makes them to be highly paid. Aside from the talent, sportsman must work hard to reach so remarkable achievement. In order to be a professional athlete, the sportsmen have to train constantly, mostly from their childhood onward, and enjoy a minimal amount of leisure time. Further, many athletes have a relatively short sports span, if their physical condition is unfit for the competitive sports, they would face the risk of unemployment. Considering these, I would argue that their commitments and sacrifice deserve the abundant reserve. Finally, the value brought by the sportsmen is invaluable. For example, Zhuang Zedong, a legend Ping pang player in China, witnessed and participated the “Ping pong diplomacy” between China and America in 1972, which substantially prompt the development of relationship between two countries. Yao Ming, a famous basketball star, not only helps the Chinese basketball team win the Asian champion, but also builds a bridge of cultural exchange of China and United States. For these, how can you assume that elite athletes shouldn’t be overpaid? Therefore, the unique talent, sacrifice and contributions that elite sports exhibit are all compelling justifications for the size of financial compensation they receive.
