Competition is common in every field of life. For example, the Olympic Games is the most famous competition in the world. In the four hundred meter swimming race, the swimmers plunge into the water at the signal. Each swings his or her arms and legs and tries his or her best to be the first. Also there is the competition for jobs, for promotion, for customers, and so on. We can say, in a certain sense, competition stimulates people's interest in work and helps society to go forward.
We often find that competition goes hand in trend with cooperation. Take, for example, a volleyball match. The members of the team cooperate with each other. One serves the ball, Then another passes the ball to a certain height for a still other to hit it over the net while the other members try to block it on its return. It requires good team work to win the game.
While we advocate competition, we cannot forget cooperation. Human beings are social beings. No one can exist alone in the society. If you want to play the game well, you have to play with others. You cannot play single-handed and win. You have to cooperate with your playmates, who may make the social ladder for you to climb to the top. From cooperation we get mutual help and understanding. With cooperation the world is progressing at peace and in harmony.

Compete to grow and cooperate to live
Examples in the passage show us that competition and cooperation do work parallel. Namely, competition exists to arouse people’s interest and push the society forward, while cooperation plays an equally important role in our ultimate peace and victory.
Admittedly, I totally approve of cultivating both competition and cooperation, for they are indispensable qualities in this developing world. My own experience can be cited as a convincing example. Two years ago, a group of us five were involved in a project on how to prevent pollution. Realizing that there were other rivals around, I was working with all my efforts. In the meantime, I knew I wouldn’t win solely on my own. So I encouraged my fellows to work cooperatively as a team. Finally, with a good sense of competition and cooperation, we got the third prize.
In an attempt to develop these two significant skills, on one hand, we should become aware of the competition at the present time, on the other hand, we’d better take part in such group activities as the Students Union, Community Service and so on.
As social beings, we compete to grow and cooperate to live.
