With the rapid development of the human society, it was not unusual that people in 20 century believed that almost all areas of life would be improved consistently. Technological inventions were popping up, our society seemed to become more prosperous and living-friendly. In their imagination, the future world is full of progresses and everything will be better. However, with the problems and disasters in current society, we should not deny the fact that, progresses were not made in every field. There are still much to be desired, moreover, some areas of life are even going a downward trend. Dating back to the history, great advances as well as progresses have been made, especially in the latest 200 years. The invention of the efficient transport system has made our life more convenient and easier, for example, cars, trains as well as planes have facilitated the life pace and we have saved a lot of time on the way. The application of the mobile phones and computers has stimulated and strengthened our communication with others. Via the mobile phone and internet, we could get in touch with each other quickly. Every time we miss someone or have emergency to find someone, we just need to dial the number or send an e-mail and we can get on them at once. In comparison, it might take one or two days for the postman to send the messages. Besides the transportation and communication, dramatic changes have taken place in our society and apparently we live in a more convenient and more comfortable world than before. Despite all the improvements we have discussed above, we still have to recognize that our society is not developing evenly in all directions. Some areas are even deteriorating, leaving progress alone. These can be best illustrated with the example of the environment. Deforestation and endless hunting render the eco-system off balance. The increasing green gas emission results in the global warming. The ozone layer problem is still in the centre of environmentalists' concerns. All in all, we should not hold a cheerful prospect for areas of our world and develop scientifically and economically at the expense of environment. Instead, we should take all the factors into consideration and have a basic evaluation before implementation of all the policies. Based on the cost-benefit model, people's health and happiness takes priority, which relies heavily on the equilibrium of different systems of the world.
