Everyone of us is a potential consumer in the global market, especially young people who are able and desiring to buy. So what is the good side of advertisements? Advertisements, by its fundamental feature, tell us what to buy. New products in McDonalds and Estee Lauder publicize themselves in TV adverts. Furthermore, one special type of advertisements, public service announcement, uses short films to arouse public attention to certain social phenomena. The blood donation advertisement calls for charity and love; while non-smoking films give harsh warning on people’s health. These are advertisements that touch the deep of our hearts, telling us how to treat others and ourselves in a responsible way. On the other hand, false and exaggerated advertisements do great harm to individuals as well as the society. The advertisers rack their brains, using words like “a must-have for successful man” or “rich people’s choice”. Audience indulge in these illusions. People buy unnecessary things to pretend they have a rosy life by simply possessing them. Moreover, some advertisements reinforce social stereotype. Fat girls envying drug-taking slim girls, housewives taking care of their husbands, and rich old men who are always surrounded with beautiful young girls. These images do harm to our society, because these are the very ideas we need to fight down. The ideas that stop a girl appreciating her own figure. The ideas that maintain sexual discrimination. Advertisements are a reflection of what happens in the real life, and they influence our own daily life, but not always in a good way. As far as I am concerned, the government should carry out advertising standards, in order to eliminate false or misleading information. ”Good” advertisements, such as public service announcements, should be promoted in response to social needs.
