Here we are. This is a place of interest in Fuzhou called San Fang Qi Xiang. If I translate it in English, it means “Three lanes and seven alleys”. This place started in the famous TANG dynasty, and people kept building this place until the last Chinese dynasty, King dynasty. Now, it’s been protected by the city government, so people keep repairing it, you saw it in the church, right. Now let’s back to the story, a lot of famous people in ancient China lived in here. We had Lin Zexu memorial, Bin Xin and Lin Juemin ’s houses here. Mr. Lin Zexu is the person who did his best to stop the UK sell poison to China. Mrs.Bin Xin is a great writer. Mr. Lin Juemin is a leader of a civil rights movement to create a democracy China, nearly make China just like the USA. Well, this is the most famous person in this area, and we have a lot of other greatness people. OK, now we are walking on the main street, Nan Hou Street. Here is just like a shopping mall. It nearly has everything, include some Fuzhou’s local snack. You can see some part of Chinese culture here. We’d better get into some Chinese painting shop or jade shop. Here we also have some Beijing Opera style. Remember the first day we met and I gave you something I wrote and you asked me: “What is this General Guan means?” If we are lucky enough today, we’ll see his Opera style in here. Now, you are in Wen Ru lane. This is the most important lanes in those three. The name of this lane means come back home with successful. This lane is important because in SONG dynasty, there are three people passed the Ke Ju exam. This Ke Ju exam is the National Civil Servant Exam Ver.1.00. and the modern National Civil Servant Exam is Ver.2.00. And Ver.1.00 is harder than Ver.2.00, only 1%~2% will be pass, they only choose thirty-three people in billions of them. After they pass the exam, lots of politicians scientist and some other stuff lived in here. Here is Wen Ru lanes. I don’t know how to explain this name in English, because there’s lots of thing which is not necessary should be mention. Well, we have General Zhang Jing and the Navy General Chen Jiliang, Mr. Chen Chengxi. The first one is a general in MING dynasty, he joined in a battle that defeat the attackers. And the second General works for the democracy China. The third man, his son is Pu Yi’s teacher. And Mr. Pu Yi is the last emperor of China. The most important thing in this lane is at the entrance. It’s the rules of this lane. It’s in the wall for a long time ago. The last lane in this area is Guang Lu lane. It became a road. You might see cars drive in the lane. But it’s still beautiful, get the ancient spirit and the modern smelling together. By the way, the boy I introduced in what I wrote, my best friend during my elementary school year, he lives in here. Go along this lane, you might see nothing except restaurant and apartment and Lin Zexu memorial is at the street corner. When you reach my friend’s house, Oops, you are nearly out of the area. But I can tell you, a great famous writer in the modern age lived in here once. His name is Yu Dafu. Although there is nothing special, but this road is beautiful. We can have a walk if you want. This is Yang Qiao road. You maybe knew that. But it was a part of San Fang Qi Xiang. But the government let it became a road. From here we can get to our church quickly. But whatever how this place change, I still have stories to tell you. First, we had a river here. And this is where the water of the east and the water of the west meted. You might imagine water from different ways rush over here and crack. There were two trees on the river bank, well they were in different sides, hold each other’s leafs just like boyfriend and girlfriend hold their hands together. So, there’s an old love story about the trees, it says that the two trees are lovers. It’s just like Romeo and Juliet. The house you see at the end of the main street is Bin Xin’s and Lin Juemin’s old house. You remember them? They lived in the same house, but different rooms. Right here this is Lang Guan alley. The most important place in this alley is Yan Fu ‘s old house. Yan Fu is a famous ideologist and translation in King Dynasty. He studied in a London’s navy university, then he come back to China for preaching Western philosophy and biology, he loved Darvon most. By the way, he was tried to help the King dynasty navy became strong, but because he had different ideas with the secretary of state Li Hongzhang, so he leave the Chinese navy. And in year 1921, he died in here, the house in this alley. This is Ta alley, Ta means pagoda. We call this place Ta alley because here has a pagoda once in Nan Song dynasty. Then the pagoda disappear in the historical data. Here is Huang alley, in the other words, yellow alley. Because a family which use Huang as their last name lived in here. And they are very respectable. So everyone call this place Huang alley. We have lots of politicians lived here. We have An Min alley here. The name means calm the people down. It’ s name came from the end of the Tang dynasty. A farmer revolt army came here and said they will calm the people down. So the alley get it’ s name. This is a place that communist party and their army had work during the World War II. Now the Chinese communist party became the Chinese government, so this place has been protected. Well, I don’t like the communist party, so I don’t like this place. But that’s another story of guiding in here, let’s get over it. Now, we are in Ji Bi alley. Remember the National Civil Servant Exam Ver.1.00. in the other words Ke Ju exam? The name of this alley comes from this, too. Because there’s a guy who lived in this alley passed the exam, and everyone here mucked him before he pass it. So when he came home happily, everyone wants to find a place to hide quickly. And Ji Bi means hide quickly in Chinese. Then in Ming Dynasty, people changed the words with the same sound, and that meaning became blessing and happiness. The name of this alley told the human’s wishes to God. San Fang Qi Xiang has a nickname, the nickname is “the Architecture Museum of Ming and King Dynasty”, so I will introduce you some special style of Chinese architecture. You see the wall there, it was called Ma An Wall. Ma An means saddle in Chinese. This kind of wall got this name because the shape of the wall looks like a saddle. Well, I don’t know how exactly it looks like a saddle. But, never mind. You can see the wall is higher than the roof because the use of this kind of wall is to protect a house from fire and thief. The wall is high, so thief can’t go across it. And the old houses is China is made of wood, so if one house is on fire, the holy block will be burning in a few minutes. The wall’s destiny in a fire is to intercept the fire from burn the other houses. Another special one is decorate of the house. There are many kinds of decorate. Such as Chinese dragon, people, plants (most of them are flowers) and other beautiful pictures. And these pictures has meanings of happiness and blessing.
