Whether government should invest in art or other aspects of the society? This issue has become the focus of public concerns and divided the general public over a long time. And many governments in the world have already adopted various approaches with both positive and negative outcomes. People who are against the investment of public fund in art believe that there are many more pressing problems in our society, for example public health. It is obvious that the priority should always been given to meeting people's most basic needs. Considering the fact many countries in the world still suffer from deceases resulting from lack of clean water and public health services, the government in those countries should concentrate their efforts and budgets on addressing these problems because they have much greater threat to those people and societies. For this reason, it may seems justifiable to drop artists from the list of government supporting subjects. However, people against funding artists ignore another important consideration that the government always takes into account when making decision on whether to support a project: the long term effects on the society. Admittedly, Art in itself, cannot bring in as much economic benefit as other business related projects. However, it is an indispensable aspect of our society because spiritual needs are just as important as physical needs for human beings. While failing to satisfy our physical needs can have a direct effect on our lives in a relatively short time, failing to meet our spiritual demands often results in more profound and severe deterioration on our minds and social values though an indirect approach over a long term, making it more difficult to observe. It is widely accepted across the world that government should always bear in mind the concept of sustainable growth when forming strategy, making decision and taking action. Sustainable growth, as it connotation suggests, is a long-term concept. So in order to achieve sustainable growth, the government must have a long-term perspective and ignoring art or people's spiritual demands, is by no means in consistent with the concept of sustainability. In conclusion, my opinion is that any country should not totally abandon artists and art-related projects. In those cases with extreme strains on government budget, it is just a matter of the allocation of public fund, rather than a matter of the necessity.
