Those who have a superficial under of the famous fiction ‘Pride and Prejudice’ tend to regard it as a romantic story. However, after reading the fiction myself, I come to realize that this fiction is much more than a mere romantic story. The welcomed book, revealing the fickleness of human nature, actually indicates that understanding others and compromising on certain occasions is the key to an agreeable figure. The fiction is similar to another fiction ‘Sense and Sensibility’ written by Jane Austen, which tells another story of love and marriage. Notoriously, the two fictions almost share the same plot. Wickham tried to seduce Darcy’s sister while Willoughby did all the same with Colonel Brandon’s niece. Both of them appeared to be so attractive and agreeable that hardly anyone would notice their disgusting and dishonorable past. Simultaneously, innocent yet ignorant girls came to fall in love with this type of insincere and selfish men. However, when the girls realized the truth, the whole beautiful world which they had been imagining collapsed. Marianne was broken-hearted, whose emotional nature encouraged her misery. Lydia however, refused to admit her failure and still regard Wickham as perfect, but through Austen’s description, we could see her bleak future with her husband. Nevertheless, a deep insight is far from enough. In the two fictions, the protagonists Elinor and Elizabeth possess great sensibility and intelligence, but their life is not always smooth. In the former book, Darcy, who appeared to be pride and distant, disgusted Elizabeth. Elinor in ‘Sense and Sensibility’ met another problem. Her beloved man Edward got engaged with secrecy, which makes Elinor frustrated, even desperate. However, at last the two protagonists all got married with the ones who they fell in love with. From my point of view, their eventual happiness resides in their compromise. Elizabeth, for example, give up her stereotyped opinion of Darcy, which finally make her realized the merits of Darcy and the affection Darcy have for her. In contrast, Elinor was convinced of Edward’s love and never lost her heart. With her patience and love, as well as persistence, Edward eventually realized how silly he was and married Elinor. Apart from the characters mentioned above, we can see all kinds of people with different characteristics, such as the snobbish Fanny Dashwood and Robert Ferras, the agreeable Jane Bannet, etc. With all these typical characters, the Longbourn village is actually the epitome of the society.
